Evolution of Elliptical Galaxies up to z ≈ 1 ∗
We review the observational evidence showing that luminous cluster elliptical galaxies are old stellar systems, undergoing mostly passive stellar evolution up to redshift z ≈ 1, with approximate coeval epoch of formation. This scenario is supported by observations of local early–types, collected by 2m – 4m class telescopes, and fits the recently gained high resolution imaging (given by the refu...
متن کاملA Survey of Star - Forming Galaxies in the 1
The redshift interval 1.4 < ∼ z < ∼ 2.5 has been described by some as the ‘redshift desert’ because of historical difficulties in spectroscopically identifying galaxies in that range. In fact, galaxies can be found in large numbers with standard broad-band color selection techniques coupled to follow-up spectroscopy with UV and blue-sensitive spectrographs. In this paper we present the first re...
متن کاملO ct 1 99 8 A Survey for Low Surface Brightness Dwarf Galaxies
By applying a digital filtering technique to 1550 deg of the POSS-II in the vicinity of M31, we found two previously unidentified very low surface brightness dwarf galaxies which we designate And V and VI. Follow-up imaging with the KPNO 4-m telescope resolved these into stars easily. The V and Iband images of And V indicate a distance similar to that of M31, and <[Fe/H]> ∼ –1.5. All evidence s...
متن کاملLow-Mass Cluster Galaxies: A Cornerstone of Galaxy Evolution
Low-mass cluster galaxies are the most common galaxy type in the universe and are at a cornerstone of our understanding of galaxy formation, cluster luminosity functions, dark matter and the formation of large scale structure. I describe in this summary recent observational results concerning the properties and likely origins of low-mass galaxies in clusters and the implications of these findin...
متن کاملThe Survey for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies: I. Description and Initial Results
We introduce the Survey for Ionization in Neutral Gas Galaxies (SINGG), a census of star formation in Hi-selected galaxies. The survey consists of Hα and R-band imaging of a sample of 468 galaxies selected from the Hi Parkes All Sky Survey (HiPASS). The sample spans three decades in Hi mass and is free of many of the biases that affect other star forming galaxy samples. We present the criteria ...
